How to sell digital products in India from Instagram: ideas, pricing and delivery

A practical plan for selling ebooks, templates, presets and notes from your Instagram audience: what to make, how to price it in rupees, how buyers receive it, and what to check first.

A digital product is a file someone can use straight away: an ebook, a template, a preset pack, a set of notes, a checklist. There is nothing to pack or ship, so a small creator can sell one to a follower in another city on the same afternoon. The hard part is not the file. It is choosing something people actually want, pricing it sensibly and making the buying path obvious.

This guide is a practical plan for Indian creators and small businesses, using the aipatnam Store for delivery. It is not tax or legal advice, and it does not promise sales.

Start from what people already ask you

The best first product answers a question that already lands in your comments and DMs. Read the last month of both. Look for the same question asked three or more times in different words: “where did you get this template”, “can you share your notes”, “which preset do you use”.

Write down each repeated question, then ask which one you could answer with a file. A person who has already asked is much more likely to buy than a stranger who has not.

  • Creators and educators: study notes, revision sheets, lesson plans, worksheets.
  • Designers and photographers: Canva or Lightroom templates, presets, mockups.
  • Small businesses: price lists, order forms, packaging guides, festival campaign calendars.
  • Coaches: workbooks, tracker sheets, meal or workout plans.

Make it small, specific and finished

A narrow product is easier to describe, easier to review and easier to trust. “Instagram bio and highlight templates for home bakers” sells itself in a sentence. “Social media pack” does not.

Before you upload, open the file the way a buyer will, on a phone. Check that fonts are embedded, links work, images are not blurry and the first page tells people what to do next. A buyer who struggles to open the file blames the product, not their phone.

Price it in rupees, and start low

These are our suggestions, not rules. Pricing a first product is guesswork, so keep the cost of being wrong low:

  • Offer one free sample or a short free guide first. It builds trust and tests the whole upload, review and delivery path at no risk.
  • Price the paid product as a simple, round rupee amount that a follower would spend without thinking about it, such as the cost of a coffee or a lunch.
  • Raise the price for the next version once people buy and tell you what they used it for. Lowering a price that was too high is awkward; raising a price that was too low is easy.

In the Store, the price you set is the price at checkout. The refund policy for digital products also treats the price shown at checkout as final, with no extra Store charge.

Free first, then paid

A free digital product is the best first listing. A visitor signs in to claim it, it appears under Purchases and they can come back to download it. You see the claim on your Orders page. It lets you test upload, review and delivery from another account before any money is involved.

Paid selling has extra requirements, and it opens in stages. At the time of writing, a paid listing needs an active Advance plan, an approved bank and tax profile and an open rollout. If the Paid button is disabled when you create a product, open Paid selling and payouts from Digital products to see what is missing on your account. Paid selling may not be available to you yet.

Give buyers a reason to trust it

  • Add a clear cover image and a title that says what the file is and who it is for.
  • Set a PDF preview where you can, so people see a few real pages before they buy or claim.
  • List exactly what is inside: the number of pages, file formats and what software opens them.
  • Say what the file is not. Honest limits prevent most disputes.

Every product goes through review before it appears publicly, and changing the title, description, file, cover or preview of a live listing sends it back to review for most sellers. Plan edits for when a short gap is fine.

Bring your audience to the product

Put the product link in your bio, in a pinned comment and in a story link sticker. For a more personal route, use comment-to-DM: ask people to comment a keyword on a post or reel, and send them the product link in a DM. Our guide on comment-to-DM walks through the setup, and the Reels guide covers how to attach it to a Reel.

Show the product in use. A short reel that walks through a template, or a carousel with three real pages from your notes, does more than a plain “link in bio” caption.

After the sale: refunds, support and taxes

A paid digital product is supplied by the creator named on its listing. Under the Store refund policy, once a working file has been delivered as described, a change of mind alone does not normally qualify for a refund. Buyers keep their rights if they were charged twice or incorrectly, did not receive access, received a corrupt file or the product differs materially from its description. Answer buyer messages quickly and fairly, because most issues are simple to fix.

Selling can have tax consequences, including GST registration once your turnover crosses the legal threshold. Rules depend on your situation, so ask a chartered accountant. For the legal basis of GST registration, see the CGST Act source below.

Questions people ask

What kinds of files can I sell in the Store?

The Store is for digital products such as ebooks, templates and presets. A separate Your Instagram shop area is for physical products, where buyers contact you on WhatsApp. Check the seller rules for what is not allowed.

Do I need a website?

No. Your Store listing has its own page and link, which you can put in your Instagram bio, stories, comments and DMs.

Why is the Paid button disabled?

Paid digital selling needs an active Advance plan, an approved bank and tax profile and an open rollout. Open Paid selling and payouts to see which of these your account is missing. Free listings work without them.

Can buyers get a refund?

Under the Store refund policy, a change of mind alone does not normally qualify once a working file has been delivered as described. Double charges, missing access, corrupt files and products that differ materially from the listing are handled case by case. Buyers write to support@aipatnam.com.

Start with one free file, check its review status, then test the buyer path from another account.
