Comment “PRICE” to get a DM: how to set up comment-to-DM the right way

A step-by-step guide to comment-triggered DMs on Instagram: choosing keywords, writing the public reply and the DM, testing the link flow, and avoiding common mistakes.

“Comment GUIDE and I’ll send it to you” makes the next step clear: someone asks for a specific resource, and a comment campaign can send one private reply linked to that request. The result still depends on Instagram delivery and whether the person checks their inbox or message requests.

Done badly, though, it floods people with links they did not want and makes your comment section look like a bot farm. Here is how to set it up so it helps both your reach and your sales.

Step 1: pick the post and the keyword

Choose a post or reel that already explains the value — a product reveal, a tutorial, a free checklist. The keyword should be one short, natural word that people would type anyway.

  • Sellers: PRICE, DETAILS, LINK, or the product name (SAREE, CAKE).
  • Creators: GUIDE, NOTES, RECIPE, TEMPLATE.
  • Services: BOOK, SLOT, CALL.

Add two or three variations people actually use, including short forms and local words: “price, pp, rate, kitna, entha”. InstaDM matches whole words, so “price” does not accidentally match “priceless”. Exclude words that signal a complaint, such as “refund” or “cancel”, then handle those comments manually in Reply Manager.

Step 2: write the public reply

The public reply under the comment tells everyone else that asking works, which brings more comments. Keep it short and vary it so the comment section does not look copy-pasted. Write four or five versions:

  • “Sent! Check your DMs 💌”
  • “Done, {{username}} — it’s in your inbox ✨”
  • “DM’d you the details 🙌”
  • “Check your requests folder if you don’t see it 📩”

The last one matters: a private reply may appear in message requests, especially when the person has not messaged you before. Test that path from another account.

Step 3: write the DM — and consider the two-step flow

Instagram allows one private reply to a comment. In InstaDM it starts as a text message, sometimes with a quick reply prompt. You can deliver a simple link on tap or ask a question before delivering it:

Link without Ask firstAsk first
First DMYour message with “Send me the link” quick reply; plain-text URL if Instagram rejects the buttonYour question or opener, such as “Want the details? Reply YES”
After they respondThe link buttonYour follow-up text, link button or product card

WhyThe person can request the link with one tapTheir response opens the messaging window for supported cards and further replies

Use Ask first when the answer changes what you send next, or when you want to show a product photo with price, an “Order on WhatsApp” button or a PDF. The extra step asks the person to respond; it does not guarantee a sale or even a second message.

Step 4: keep follow checks in the right flow

InstaDM’s Only for followers option belongs to a DM keyword Automation, where the person messages you first. It is not a setting on a comment Campaign. For a comment-to-DM giveaway, deliver what the caption promised without adding an unannounced follow requirement. If you want a follower-only DM keyword flow, build it in Automations and test what non-followers receive.

Step 5: test before you post

  1. Comment the keyword from a friend’s account (your own comments are ignored by good tools).
  2. Check that the public reply appears and reads naturally.
  3. Open the friend’s DMs and requests folder. Allow time for processing, then check the campaign’s sent or failed count if the message is missing.
  4. Tap every link and button in the Instagram phone app. Desktop display can differ, so the text should make sense on its own.

Common mistakes

  • Using a keyword that is also a normal word in your comments (“nice”, “wow”) — everyone gets a DM they did not ask for.
  • A DM that is just a link with no context — people do not trust bare links.
  • Letting matched comments sit for more than seven days — the private-reply deadline runs from each comment, even when the post itself is old.
  • Sending more than one automated DM to the same person in a day.
  • Forgetting the people who do not get a DM: pin a comment with the same information for everyone.

Questions people ask

Does comment-to-DM increase reach?

It can encourage relevant comments and start conversations, but it does not guarantee more reach. Judge the campaign by useful replies, delivered DMs and what people do after receiving them.

Why did some people not get my DM?

Possible reasons include an expired seven-day window for that comment, InstaDM’s recipient cooldown, an opt-out, missing permissions or a delivery error. Also ask the person to check message requests.

Can I send a product photo in the first DM?

No — the first reply to a comment can’t carry photos or product cards. Ask a short question (or add a one-tap button) first, and send the photo or product card after they respond.

Create one comment campaign, then test its public reply, private message and link from another account.
